Maxis Announces NeXT X1 Smartphone: 2 Years 1-to-1 Warranty, 6GB Data, RM98 A Month

Maxis has unveiled its next “all-in-one” smartphone package, the NeXT X1. Again focusing on first time postpaid users, as well as those looking for the simplicity and convenience of an all-in plan, the NeXT X1 also has plenty of after-sales features.

The NeXT X1 is essentially a higher-end version of the NeXT M1 phone that Maxis introduced earlier this year. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage. The display is a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS panel, with Dragontrail glass, while the camera solutions are pretty straightforward with 16MP rear and 8MP front cameras. Rounding up the specs list is a 3,000mAh battery, a rear fingerprint sensor, and Android 7.

However, the hardware is just half the story. Maxis is placing a greater emphasis on the after sales service as a differentiator once again on its NeXT smartphones. The first half of this is a robust warranty program. The NeXT X1 comes with a 2-year warranty with a two-time, no questions asked 1-to-1 device replacement if something unfortunate happens to the device during the warranty period. There’s also a one-time screen replacement warranty that’s valid for 12 months.

The other half is the bundled, ready-to-use data plan that comes with the NeXT X1. It comprises of a 6GB data quota (3GB all-day + 3GB weekend), 50 minutes free calls to all networks, and on-demand internet booster packs that go as low as RM4/GB. This plan is exclusive to the NeXT X1 bundle, and costs RM98 a month (phone + plan) for 24 months.

The Maxis NeXT X1 is now available today in Steel Grey at all Maxis channels, including its online store, physical Maxis Centres, and Maxis Exclusive Partners nationwide. The older NeXT M1 is also still available as a more affordable option, priced at RM78 a month.

The New HTC U11+ Upgrades The U11 In Meaningful Ways; Coming To Malaysia December 2017

As expected, HTC has unveiled its final flagship of the year in the shape of the HTC U11+. It’s a souped-up version of the U11 released earlier this year, building on the best parts of what was already a solid flagship.

In our review of the U11, we described it as missing quite a few 2017 smartphone trends, such as the 18:9 display, slim bezels, and a dual-camera setup. Well, HTC fixed two of the three on the U11+, which sports a 6-inch 18:9 2880 x 1440 Super LCD panel with minimal side bezels.

As for the camera, the HTC U11+ still uses the same 12MP UltraPixel 3 sensor from the U11 – but that’s not exactly a bad thing; in our review the camera was a pleasant surprise, with super fast autofocus and better than expected overall performance.

Another notable addition on the U11+ is the significantly larger battery; it packs a massive 3,930mAh battery – 31% larger than the 3,000mAh cell on the U11. Given that the U11 already had a solid battery life, the larger battery could mean “real” two days of battery life.

These are on top of the other flagship level hardware: Snapdragon 835 processor, 4/6GB of RAM, 64/128GB of expandable storage, 8MP front camera, BoomSound audio (which is now 30% louder), Gorilla Glass 5, and an improved IP68 rating (from IP67).

The software sees a few upgrades too, with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. HTC’s Sense UI has slimmed down greatly over the years, and Edge Sense has also been enhanced with the addition of the Edge Launcher. It is a circular app launcher that activates with a squeeze on the phone’s sides, allowing you quick and one-handed access to apps, contacts, and even toggles for some settings.

As with the U11, HTC also bundles the USonic in-ear earphones, which creates a custom sound profile after mapping the user’s inner ear. These earbuds also have active noise cancelling, making them actually pretty good value as a pair of bundled earphones. There’s also a USB Type C to 3.5mm audio jack dongle, and a U11+ Clear Shield case, which works with Edge Sense.

The HTC U11+ will be coming to Malaysia in December 2017, but its price has not been revealed. It is priced at 799 Euros (it won’t be available in the US), and will come in Ceramic Black, Amazing Silver, and a unique Translucent Black colourway, which Android Authority reports will only be available in January or February 2018. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on whether that option will be coming our way.

The World’s Biggest One-Day Only Sale is Happening Soon

China’s e-commerce scene is unlike anywhere else in the world. With several e-commerce platforms that each have millions of products for sale, the scale is such that eventually, it will attract the attention of the rest of the world.

Singles Day, celebrated on 11 November in China each year, began in the early 1990s as a form of an Anti-Valentines Day – but Alibaba took it as an opportunity to create a one-day only sales event that has transformed the e-commerce scene globally. And while most Malaysians are only very recently exposed to this “11/11” sales in the last couple of years, Alibaba started its Singles Day sales way back in 2009.

This year promises to be the biggest Singles Day sales event ever – which shouldn’t be a surprise: each year, the sales figures for 11/11 sales have grown exponentially. In 2013, Alibaba recorded a gross merchandise volume valued at $5.14 billion, but in 2015 that figure jumped to 14.3 billion.

While 11/11 sales are now common across Asia, the time may have come to check out the original 11/11 sales proprietor. Alibaba’s Taobao and Tmall platforms have always offered affordable international shipping for orders outside of China, and with the upcoming Singles Day sales coming in less than two weeks, it could be worth checking out – and save more in the process.

One of the largest online catalogues in the world

Tmall is Alibaba’s B2C (business to consumer) e-commerce platform, with over 70,000 brand shops operating on the site. All items sold on Tmall are guaranteed to be genuine – to sell on Tmall, the entity is required to provide documentations to confirm the authenticity of the organisation, company, manufacturer, or brand. On each seller’s page, certificates of quality and compliance are also displayed to allow consumers to shop with confidence.

For 11/11, Tmall has a special microsite (1111.tmall.com) that lists all products on sale, as well as special promotions and events building up to the day. These include instantly redeemable red packets, shipping rebates, as well as special brand offers for 11/11.

In total, there are over 8 million products for sale on Tmall, with everything available even for international shoppers. The most popular items on the platform are usually clothes and household goods, but savvy Malaysian shoppers will also know that Tmall is the best place to find high quality and affordable digital accessories. From tempered glass screen protectors and smartphone cases all the way to PC cables, there is definitely something for everyone.

11/11 2017 Special Offers

For all shoppers, Tmall is offering red packets that can be instantly redeemable to offset the total purchase value or shipping charges. In total, Tmall is offering 170 million Yuan in red packets to shoppers that can only be used on 11 November. These red packets are similar to coupon codes or vouchers, but their value are randomly generated whenever you click on designated buttons.

Depending on the value of the red packet, international shipping fees can go down to as low as RM0 – that’s right, free international shipping to Malaysia.

On top of that, shoppers who are buying large amounts will also be happy to know that for shipping fees to South East Asia above 299 Yuan, they will get an instant 50 Yuan rebate. In addition, for shoppers who pay via e-banking using Malaysian banks on purchases above RM300, they will also receive an instant RM30 rebate off the total.

Easy registration

Finally, registering on Tmall is also exceptionally easy. Malaysians can even sign up for a Tmall account using their Malaysian mobile phone numbers, and start shopping right away. Needless to say, a Tmall account is also free for everyone.

With 11 November falling on a Saturday this year, Malaysians can shop online without distractions on the biggest one day sale ever. We shouldn’t have to point out that this is a once-a-year only sale, so if you miss out you’ll have to wait another year.

How Samsung Regained Consumer Trust After the Galaxy Note 7

$
0
0

“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.”

Warren Buffet’s timelines don’t quite apply, but the context certainly rings true when one talks about the last three years at Samsung’s mobile division. Having grown into a formidable maker of excellent smartphones, the company stumbled upon the very sword that slayed its rivals.

As the smartphone era accelerated upon us in the last decade, Samsung was constantly at the forefront in its pursuit to be the number one smartphone maker. It focused on offering powerful hardware and cramming as many features as it can into its flagship phones – before eventually having consumers grow tired of Samsung’s “kitchen sink” approach.

Thankfully, the South Korean company began a shift in direction starting with 2014’s Galaxy Alpha. The phone was stunning in its simplicity, focusing on design and aesthetics above gimmicky features. But most importantly, Samsung also began talking about its products differently

Humanising a technology brand

Pio Schunker, SVP, Head of Global Brand Marketing, Samsung Mobile

With such a strong engineering DNA, Samsung knew it needed a different set of hands to evolve the way it spoke to its customers. Today’s consumers care less about hardware and more about what it actually means to improve their daily lives. They also like a brand whose vision aligns with theirs, which, it must be said, is more than a “milennial thing”.

That’s why Samsung’s recruitment of former Coca-Cola marketing executive, Pio Schunker, in early 2015 was a shrewd one. He was tasked with a three-year plan to transform what people perceive to be an engineering company into an iconic and trusted brand. As Senior Vice President, Global Head of Brand Marketing at Samsung Mobile, Schunker is responsible for how each new flagship mobile device is articulated, and his vision was clear: to gradually focus less on specs and more on creating innovation that people truly need.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge – the first flagship smartphones under his reign – was a huge moment for Samsung’s shift in branding. The smartphones’ features were presented in advertisements within common real-life scenarios and how, naturally, the phones improve them. A classic example is the demonstration of the phones’ IP68 rating for dust and water resistance in the ad shown below; rather than explain what IP68 means, Samsung infuses a budding romance story to pull viewers in.

The approach was subtle, but the message was clear. Schunker revealed that the ad above was actually made for the SEA market, but struck such a positive note that the commercial was eventually aired in several markets in the West. The strategy of storytelling has continued since, moving away from “geeky tech” to something more lifestyle-based.

Aside from that, Schunker is also responsible for the visual identity of Samsung’s mobile division. It is streamlined on all fronts across the globe, with the use of a common font for texts, and a three-colour visual approach: black, white, and blue.

The results were astounding. The Galaxy S7 series recorded a 132% increase in sales compared to the Galaxy S6 series, and brand confidence was at an all-time high. For many customers, the new iPhone was no longer the default choice for a premium smartphone anymore.

All was going great for Samsung, riding on a momentum that in due time would surely cement its brand as an innovative company that resonates well with its consumers. The next flagship, a new Galaxy Note smartphone – a whole new smartphone series pioneered by Samsung – would further enhance that reputation.

And then disaster struck.

Fire from the ashes

In its pursuit of the bleeding edge of technology, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 smartphone crumbled under pressure. What began as a series of isolated cases of the premium phablet spontaneously combusting rapidly turned into a crisis of unprecedented levels: something was clearly not right with Samsung’s new flagship phone.

Schunker and his team had some massive undertaking ahead of them. As Samsung struggled to find the cause of the problem with the Note 7, Schunker needed to devise a branding strategy with which the brand can recover from this monumental crisis. Fail, and the company’s entire mobile business could go under.

Early on, the team agreed that the scale of this issue meant there was no way Samsung should brush this under the carpet. Samsung must appear to be responsible, and take proactive steps to ensure something like this never happens again. As the company finally concluded its investigations, Schunker’s team also began laying the groundwork.

The first step in the brand recovery was making the unusual move of calling a press conference to reveal the results of the investigation. Samsung’s mobile head, DJ Koh, explained in depth the root cause of the issue: the high-density batteries provided by one of its suppliers had a design flaw that could cause spontaneous combustion within the device.

This move was crucial for Samsung, but more so for the brand, as it owned up to its missteps. Revealing the extraordinary measures taken to identify the cause was another step in rebuilding consumers’ shattered confidence. Samsung deployed 700 researchers who stress-tested 200,000 Note 7 phones, 30,000 Note 7 batteries, and enlisted a third-party audit of the investigation for full transparency.

The next step was just as important: communicating Samsung’s plans to ensure this would never happen again on the same scale as the Note 7. DJ Koh would provide details of a new 8-point battery check program for all Samsung phones, and that this program is more stringent than industry standards – an important note of Samsung’s commitment.

With the press conference and battery check program announced, Schunker’s team moved swiftly into the next phase. From rebuilding brand trust, the marketing train took off to its next stop: brand love.

The success of the company’s pre-Note 7 branding exercises was a good indicator that the company was in the right path. The Galaxy S8 series saw Schunker’s team taking advantage of the stunning new Infinity Display as a driver of the seemingly limitless possibilities the phones offer to users. It also ties in nicely with the company’s new brand motto, “Do what you can’t.”

But it was the introduction of the next Galaxy Note that all eyes were trained at. This time around, Samsung did not beat around the bush. At the phone’s launch, the company started with a two-minute “Thank You Note” tribute to fans of the Note series. Again, the montage hit the right notes, portraying humility and ownership of the company’s mistake. Only then did the company proceed to show off the Note 8.

Once again, the company’s “do what you can’t” motto was on full display with the Note 8; since it was a Note, the company focused on features unique to the S Pen, as well as the new dual-camera feature – a first on a Samsung flagship.

Turning Weakness Into Strength

Today, the Galaxy Note 7 tragedy is rarely spoken of beyond the occasional explosion joke. It is a great indicator of the public’s trust in the brand – a remarkable turnaround considering what was at stake. In essence, Samsung’s branding team turned a full-fledged crisis into an opportunity.

The table above shows just how well that move has paid off for Samsung. In just over a year, Samsung managed not just to recover from the Note 7 crisis, but to actually improve its impression score from its pre-Note 7 days.

However, Schunker’s work is not yet done. The three-year journey to humanise the tech brand may be reaching an end, but it is also a fascinating opportunity to…do bigger things.

Apple will be making both the Silver and Space Grey models available for the Malaysian market, and as usual, the iPhone X will be available at the Apple Online Store, Apple Authorised Resellers, and through our local telcos.

The 64GB model will retail for RM5,149, while the 256GB model will be selling at RM5,899.

Lazada Malaysia is kicking off its month-long online sales event, called Online Revolution 2017, this Saturday. Coinciding with the global 11/11 Singles Day online sales, the e-commerce platform is offering plenty of deals to entice Malaysians to shop on Lazada over the next month.

With about 90 million products for sale on the platform, Lazada is undoubtedly the largest e-commerce platform in the country. For the Online Revolution 2017 sale, Lazada has roped in multiple brand partners on the platform to offer even better deals for the coming month.

For instance, Petronas has moved into the e-commerce space by offering petrol gift cards at a discount in Lazada, while mobile top-ups as well as other e-vouchers and travel packages are now also widely available on the platform. Some brands will also offer “Mystery Boxes” with huge markdowns during the sale. And as usual, Malaysians can expect flash sales, various voucher codes, and a new RM1 deals page for maximum value for money.

Finally, Lazada has roped in various marketing partners including Digi and CIMB to offer giveaways worth more than RM60 million to Malaysians who shop on Lazada during the Online Revolution 2017 sale. These giveaways include vouchers, products such as the iPhone X, Club Med holiday packages, multiple Perodua Bezza cars, and even a chance to travel to the US and experience a zero-gravity flight.

Lazada Malaysia CEO, Hans-Peter Ressel, expects to “1 out of 5 Malaysians” to be on Lazada’s website or app during 11/11. The Lazada app is already downloaded by “a third of the country’s population”, so Ressel’s expectations does not seem too far-fetched. The 2016 Online Revolution saw over 500,000 orders placed, and Lazada Malaysia is gearing up for a much higher figure over the course of the month.

Check out Lazada Malaysia’s Online Revolution 2017 page for more details.

iPhone X Pre-Order in Malaysia Opens 17 November 2017

Digi and U Mobile have both announced their pre-order dates for the iPhone X, which will start from 17 November 2017. The device will officially go on sale in Malaysia the following week, on 24 November.

The two telcos are the only parties to have confirmed the dates; the other two major telcos in Malaysia, Maxis and Celcom, have made no announcements so far. Neither have the four authorised resellers (Machines, Mac City, Epicentre, Switch) confirmed, though there is a suspicion they are required to wait for Apple’s direction before making an announcement.

Yesterday, Apple announced that the iPhone X will be available in 13 more countries globally, with Malaysia part of this wave. The press release did not mention about pre-orders for the new iPhone, but given that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus pre-orders opened one week before they were available in Malaysia, we can expect Apple to do the same for the iPhone X.

The iPhone X will retail for RM5,149 for the 64GB version, and RM5,899 for the 256GB model. It will be available in Silver and Space Grey options, and Apple has confirmed that several accessories will also be available alongside the phone.

Few are actually aware of the existence of the Samsung Innovation Museum. Located in the heart of the Samsung Digital City HQ in Suwon, South Korea, the museum serves as a reminder of Samsung’s rich history, as well as a deep look at the progress of technology, and the future it holds.

We were invited to visit Samsung Digital City, which included a brief tour of the Samsung Innovation Museum. It was ultimately way too short to fully experience the interactive nature of the museum, which includes recreated samples of famous inventions, a collection of Samsung’s earliest TVs and mobile phones, and the semi-transparent displays used to relay more information on the exhibits.

The Samsung Innovation Museum is a fully-guided tour, where prior bookings are required on weekdays. Entrance, however, is free. Find out more information at its official website.

Maybank And CIMB Bank Are Making It Easier To Shop Online On 11 November

Two of Malaysia’s largest banks are making it easier for Malaysians to shop online come midnight (11 November) for the biggest online shopping event this year. Maybank and CIMB Bank have both rescheduled their maintenance downtimes to accommodate for the 11 November sales.

Online banking activities, including credit card use, are usually halted as banks across Malaysia has a scheduled maintenance starting from 12am to 12.45am daily. But with the major e-commerce platforms out in full force for 11/11 – not to mention Tmall also enticing Malaysians – the banks are doing their part to ensure Malaysians can use their credit cards and online banking services to make payments for 11/11.

Maybank will be pushing forward its maintenance downtime to 11.30pm to 11.59pm tonight (10 November), while CIMB Bank will do its maintenance from 11.40pm to 12am.

Interestingly, RHB Bank, Public Bank, Affin Bank, and Hong Leong Bank did not disclose any plans to move their maintenance times.

In any case, Maybank and CIMB Bank customers should still face some traffic when paying for items on 11 November. Lazada CEO Hans-Peter Ressel has already predicted that 20% of Malaysians will be accessing Lazada’s website or app tomorrow, so the payment gateways could still be congested.

Relive Memories With The Samsung Galaxy Note FE From Only RM2299

The Samsung Galaxy FE may be a year old and risen from the ashes of the Galaxy Note 7, but these are perfectly safe devices with new batteries fitted inside, making them an ideal alternative for to the Galaxy Note 8.

Today, G Store in Lazada is offering the Galaxy Note FE for just RM2,299 – a huge RM300 cut from its retail price of RM2,599. Not bad for a phone that’s just been available a few weeks ago in Malaysia. The RM2,299 listing is for the Onyx Black option, but the Blue version costs a little more at RM2,349.

Lazada’s MacBook Air 13 Prices Are Almost Unbelievable

$

Apple does not make laptops like the MacBook Air anymore – which is probably why Apple continues to manufacture them as an alternative to the super-thin MacBook. Today, Lazada gives us another reason to get the MacBook Air 13: discounts of up to RM900.

The e-commerce giant is selling both the 2017 4GB/128GB and 2-17 8GB/256GB models of the MacBook Air 13 at really steep discounts this 11/11. Where the 4GB/128GB model currently retails for RM4,199 at the Apple Online Store, Lazada is selling the same model for RM3,499 – RM700 less.

But the better deal has to be the 8GB/256GB model: Apple’s retail price for this laptop is RM4,999 – Lazada is selling this variant for just RM4,099. If this model is sold out (which we quite expect), there is an IT seller listing this model at RM4,199 – still a massive, massive discount.

With the extra storage space and RAM, the RM600 extra is actually very worth it. In fact, these prices are actually considerably cheaper than similar configurations for premium Windows Ultrabooks (though these MacBooks are still running on 5th-gen Intel Core i processors).

In fact, these prices are much lower than Apple’s education pricing. With a discount as steep as these, it won’t be surprising to see these two laptops going out of stock by the end of the day.

The Xiaomi Mi A1 Just Dropped Below RM900 Today

Xiaomi’s first Android One device is impressive in many ways, and today’s 11/11 sale just gave us another one. The Xiaomi Mi A1 has now dipped below the RM900 mark.

Packing a “flagship dual camera” setup, the Mi A1 offers 2x optical zoom – something not many phones in this price range can match. It also runs on pure Android, which means it has zero bloatware and minimal lag.

For a product that’s only two months old in Malaysia, a discount of over 20% is pretty generous – but that’s what a few major sellers in Lazada are doing. The Mi A1 in Black and Gold be purchased for just RM869, and interestingly, the Pink model with local warranty is also available at RM929.

Grab A Laptop From Asus, HP, And Acer For 7% Off, Today Only

If you’ve been holding off buying that gaming laptop or Ultrabook, today’s a great day to seal the deal. Asus, HP, and Acer are all offering 7% discount codes on most laptops on their official stores in Lazada – with no limits on the discount.

Those who shop on Lazada will know that voucher codes with no caps are extremely rare, so this is a great opportunity to get some real discounts off premium laptops from the three brands. We’ve tried the coupons on all three brands’ stores, and found that they apply for most laptops listed; Acer’s code works for almost every laptop in the store.

Generally, the eligible products will have a sticker that shows the voucher code on the product page, but a little trial and error may be fruitful, such as over RM600 off the HP Omen 17 gaming laptop, or the Acer Predator 17. You can also use them on mid-range gaming laptops, such as the Omen 15 or Acer Nitro 5, or go for a premium Ultrabook such as the HP Spectre X360 or the Acer Swift 7.

Check out the brand stores here for Acer, Asus, and HP. Meanwhile, Lenovo is also offering its own storewide discount code, but it is slightly less at 5%. That’s still enough to shave a few hundred Ringgit off the Legion Y720, Legion Y520, or even the Yoga 720. The full list of eligible products can be seen from its official store page here.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 Is Back At Its Lowest Price

If you missed the Mi Note 2 offer just last week at the Mi Store KL, Xiaomi’s official store in Lazada is offering the same deal. The phone may be a year old, but for RM1,599, there is a lot of value here.

Initially retailing for RM2,499 earlier this year, the Mi Note 2 still packs quite a punch, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 6GB RAM, and 128GB of UFS 2.0 storage onboard. The Mi Note 2 also features a 22.5MP Sony IMX 318 rear and an 8MP IMX 268 front camera, while the battery is a large 4,070mAh unit with Quick Charge 3.0 support.

The most interesting aspect of the phone, of course, is the display. The Mi Note 2 sports a 5.7-inch Full HD OLED dual-curved display, and is one of the few smartphones with an OLED display around.

For just RM1,599, this is a really good phone; older flagships generally still perform as good as, if not better than current mid-range smartphones.

(Update: New Low Price!) Tesco is Throwing Prices for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8

With so many sellers on the platform, it’s natural to see prices for popular smartphones spiraling on popular sales days like these. It’s just really odd to see Tesco, of all sellers, to be offering the lowest prices we’ve seen for two of Samsung’s 2017 flagship smartphones.

The Galaxy S8, released earlier this year, has seen its price slowly drop in the last few months. Just last week we reported that you could get it for as low as RM2,399, but today, you can buy the Galaxy S8 for RM50 less: it’s just RM2,349 in Midnight Black and Orchid Grey.

Meanwhile, Tesco is also selling the Galaxy Note 8 at the lowest listed price we’ve seen so far today. At RM3,349, it quite comfortably goes lower than the previous sub-RM3,500 price tags that surfaced last month. Tesco is offering the Note 8 for RM3,349 in three colours: Black, Grey, and Gold.

Update: Looks like Tesco just got beaten to the punch by another seller, which means the Galaxy Note 8 has just hit an all-time-low in listed prices. Seller White Shadow has listed all three colourways of the Galaxy Note 8 for just RM3,279: Midnight BlackMaple Gold, and Orchid Grey. At the time of writing, the popular black option only has two units left, so if you’ve been waiting, you should make the call. Fast.

Senheng’s wide range of home appliances are now available for a one-day only offer, with discount codes of up to RM2,000. You can look through the full list of products here, but we’re more interested in the TV deals it is offering.

For today only, Senheng is offering several voucher codes to shave a significant amount off its TVs. They range from huge RM2,000, RM1,000, RM700, and RM500 codes to eligible TVs as part of a trade-up program, or 30%, 25%, and 10% codes for others.

If you’ve made it in life and can splurge a five-figure amount on a TV, this Sharp 70″ SUHD Android TV can be purchased for a full RM2,000 off. For the mere mortals among us, this 55″ Panasonic UHD TV can be yours for just over RM2,500 with the 15% code.

Meanwhile, this 55″ Sony Full HD LED TV maximises the 30% code, dropping the already-discounted RM3,099 price down to just RM2,169.30. On the other hand, the 15% code drops this 43″ Samsung UHD TV to below RM2,000.

Also, this Toshiba 43″ 4K TV may not be eligible for any Senheng vouchers, but it’s pretty worthy of its RM1,599 price tag: it’s got an IPS panel, and has Google Chromecast built in.

Check out Senheng’s TV products page for the full set of deals available.

Malaysians Spent More Than RM100 Million In Lazada Malaysia In Just One Day

This year’s 11 November Singles Day event saw Lazada Malaysia – unsurprisingly – break its record for highest Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) generated on the platform. In just 24 hours, Malaysians spent more than RM100 million in Lazada alone, as consumers took advantage of the steep discounts for many products on offer.

Lazada Malaysia has shared some fascinating insights on what went on last Saturday. In 24 hours, the website and apps recorded a total of about 10 million visits – in other words, over 6,900 visits took place every minute. Lazada Malaysia states that this figure is three times more than 2016’s Singles Day event, proving that Malaysians are fully embracing the e-commerce age.

On top of that, this RM100 million in GMV accounts for about 20% of the entire GMV for Lazada’s Southeast Asia operations on 11 November, where the figure stood at $123 million (about RM515 million). Of course, that’s nowhere near the figures hit by Alibaba in China, where the total GMV on 11 November stood at $25 *billion* (about RM105 billion).

Here are other interesting stats from Lazada Malaysia shoppers:

  • Orders ranged in prices from RM0.81 (Tiger Biscuits, 60g), all the way to RM13,499 for a 75″ Samsung UHD TV.
  • At its peak, Lazada Malaysia recorded an estimated 1,400 transactions a minute.
  • The top three categories for the sales were: Groceries, Baby & Toys, and Electronics.
  • The highest selling products were Petronas Fuel Cards, Milo 2.2kg, and Pineng power banks.
  • 32,000 diapers were sold on Lazada Malaysia on 11 November.
  • 34,000 smartphones and tablets were sold on Lazada Malaysia on 11 November.
  • Customers spent a total of RM1.2 million discounted Lazada Gift Cards which came with up to 20% immediate discount, and could only be used on 11 November.
  • Top Lazada merchants recorded more than 50x sales volumes on 11 November compared to an average day.

In addition, Lazada Malaysia also surprised some customers with same-day deliveries, with the first 11.11 order delivered to a customer at 11.30am. Many customers have also begun receiving their orders on Sunday as well as today, with most of these early deliveries usually being items sold by Lazada itself.

Of course, this is just the first day in Lazada’s month-long Online Revolution 2017 sales event. The e-commerce giants is enveloping other major online sales events coming up as part of its Online Revolution event, which includes Black Friday (24 November), Cyber Monday (27 November), as well as its own events over the course of the month: Big Baby Fair (23-27 November), Payday Sale (28 November – 3 December), and the Online Revolution Finale (12 – 14 December).

vivo has signed an agreement with Qualcomm to supply $4 billion in components with the Chinese smartphone company, as part of a series of deals signed between Chinese and US businesses worth a massive $253 billion. The deals were signed during US President Donald Trump’s recent visit to China, where he witnessed the signings alongside his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

With over 200 million users around the world, the deal naturally benefits Qualcomm just as much as is advantageous to vivo. The two companies have previously worked together prior to the $4 billion deal in various fields of smartphone development, such as artificial intelligence, photography, gaming experience, and power saving.

Many readers would remember the recent collaboration between vivo and Qualcomm in the field of biometrics back at MWC Shanghai 2017, where the company announced the Under Display Fingerprint Scanning solution, which is based on Qualcomm technology. The two companies will continue to work together, striving for further breakthroughs in 3D face recognition, palm print recognition, and iris recognition.

vivo is also working with Qualcomm in the development of new 5G-ready technologies. The two companies are developing a new 5G chipset based on years of consumer behaviour studies and experiences shared by both firms.

As one of the top five smartphone brands in the world, vivo sees this partnership as a great way to penetrate larger markets. The Chinese company has strong plans to expand into the European and Middle Eastern markets.

On top of that, vivo is also looking at this deal as a means to forge better long-term partnerships with industry partners. The vivo-Qualcomm partnership also includes patent sharing deals between the two companies.
